I. Program Outline
I-1. Doctorate Program

As the industry grows increasingly competitive, there is an increasing need for researchers with a high level of education who can demonstrate strong leadership in the global community so as to realize a sustainable society through innovations. Osaka Prefecture University and Osaka City University have been selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, Sports and Technology as the center for promoting the “Program for Leading Graduate Schools” in order to foster excellent students who are both highly creative and internationally attuned and will play leading roles in the academic, industrial and governmental sectors around the globe. In an effort to achieve this goal, we offer the “Graduate Course for System-inspired Leaders in Material Science,” a five-year straight doctoral course designed to foster leaders with a global perspective for the industrial community.

I-2. Picture of human resources to be nurtured

We aim to foster researchers equipped with the following abilities and characteristics:

  • Ability for “thinking inspired by systems and/or values”, i.e. taking a holistic view of complex events or phenomenon; “design thinking” to come up with new ideas; and “management skills” to flesh out these ideas.
  • Entrepreneurship to link cutting-edge academic achievements with industrial innovations.
  • Ability to design research strategies stemming from multilevel interdisciplinary ideas inspired by “koto-zukuri (value creation)” and formed through higher reasoning and thinking based on a deep knowledge of material science.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to take a strong leadership role in the global community, thereby having one’s own ideas disseminated and deeply rooted in society.
I-3. Curricula

This program is a five-year straight doctoral course designed to foster global leaders leading industries who have high abilities described in the above “2. Picture of human resources to be nurtured” The details are shown on the following page “Outline figure of Curriculum” and “Curricula and Accreditation.”
Those who are enrolled should take curricula in both of their own major and this program course. Accordingly, they can acquire gradually the ability mentioned at “2. Picture of human resources to be nurtured.” The course registration guidance will be delivered to the successful applicants.

I-4. Feature of the Program
(1) Integrative five-year curriculum to foster global leaders leading the industry
  1. Students can develop multi-level, interdisciplinary research techniques, by taking fundamental material science courses and fundamental system science courses that are complementary, and by experiencing research laboratory rotation.
  2. Students can develop material science management techniques, global skills, leadership, design techniques, ability to identify system-inspired
    research themes, by taking global studies courses and ideation courses.
  3. Students can comprehensively develop abilities to create businesses and identify system-inspired research themes, by taking entrepreneurship
  4. Students can themselves select their supervisors, who have achieved internationally outstanding research results. Under appropriate guidance
    from the mentors and supervisors. Students can pursue advanced research and education that crosscut composite research domains of their choice.
(2) Excellent support system
  1. Personalized mentoring system by the experienced worker as corporative executives
    Students can receive comprehensive support for curriculum, research and study planning, research laboratory rotation and study abroad by personalized mentor.
  2. Financial aids system
    Students can receive the Grants to focus on their research activities, under their own application.
  3. Research grants and educational activities expenses support system
    Students can receive the expenses for the creative educational and research activities: approach to research project in different field; take lectures in foreign universities; attend international conference, within the budget.
  4. Business internship and career path support system
    Students can receive the support for selection of business internship and planning of personal career path from the Industry-University Cooperative
    Center of Advanced Education that has produced many researchers who are playing an active role in industry.
  5. Overseas research support system
    Students have opportunities of study abroad for three months or longer, for the purpose of acquire and practice various qualities required to advanced researchers who lead industries globally. Students can receive the support from mentors not only for the expenses for study abroad educational activities of 3), but also setting the target of study abroad and destination.
II Outline of Admission
II-1. Admission Policy

Discoveries in materials science can radically change industry. This has been demonstrated by the introduction of silicon technology, semiconductor lasers, and magnetic memory devices, to name but a few. These great achievements in the 20th century can be attributed to the multi-level structure of electronics encompassing materials, devices and systems. In electronics, its lower level is treated as a black box except for input /output features and also as a component of its higher level.
In this way, technological innovation has been promoted by a highly efficient education system of researchers in each individual level. However, in recent years, new concepts of materials are appearing and the shift in the industrial structure focusing on “koto-zukuri (value creation)” is under way. Against such a backdrop, it is getting increasingly difficult to meet new challenges within the conventional technology framework. Furthermore, promotion of strategic research based on multi-level interdisciplinary ideas, driven by the feedback from systems and businesses transcending the standpoint of business seeds or a technical combination of layers, is becoming an essential element in developing sustainable and internationally competitive industries focusing on “koto-zukuri (value creation),” as well as industries underpinning a sustainable society that is safe and secure instead of industries merely focused on supplying cheap products.
In light of the current situation in which the advantageous position of Japanese industries are increasingly challenged in the international arena, there is an increasing need for highly educated research leaders, who can unleash the practice of “monozukuri” or a Japanese way of manufacturing high-value added products, which has been confined to a specific layer, and take it to a higher level by introducing the idea of “koto (value)” into the development process of “mono (goods).” Such research leaders should also be able to map out an innovative, system-oriented R & D strategy based on a combination of the layers of material, functional molecule/device and the systems, which controls them. It is an urgent task for Japan to construct an education system.
In light of the awareness of the issues mentioned above, for this Leading Program, which aims to educate system-inspired leaders for material science, who can link the achievement of fundamental R&D with proficient entrepreneurship; design research strategies stemming from multilevel nterdisciplinary ideas inspired by “koto-zukuri (value creation)” and formed through higher reasoning and thinking based on the deep knowledge of material science; and bring about innovations worthy of global recognition using their fundamental research accomplishments, we hope to recruit students who are highly motivated as follows:

  • Students who are deeply committed to the academic world; love people and nature; can tenaciously confront the problems lying ahead in the industrial community obstructing a sustainable growth and world peace; and are keenly conscious about the preservation of the global environment.
  • Students who can undauntedly collect/disseminate information in the global environment and manage them.
  • Students with an entrepreneurial mindset eager to link cutting-edge academic achievements with industrial innovation.
  • Students with the potential to become industrial leaders who can contribute to the development of a new industry with proficient entrepreneurship.
  • Students who can take a holistic view on material science inspired by systems so that new findings can be made.
  • Students highly motivated and capable of designing one’s own course-work and research plan for oneself so as to acquire the knowledge necessary to solve the problems confronted by the global society as well as industry.

II-3. Application Qualifications

Those who fall under one of the following categories and commit to enrolling in the program if they pass the examination are qualified to apply for this Program.

  1. Those who have passed the entrance examinations held by any one of (A) – (O) below and plan to be enrolled in April 2016.
  2. Those who are enrolled in the first year class of any one of (A) – (O) below at the time of applying to the SiMS program.
  3. Those who have taken the examination for the Spring (April) 2016 admission held by any one of (A) – (L) below.

II-4. Application Documents
Documents How to prepare the forms, etc.
1 Application form, Examination slip, Photo slip and Resume The form provided by the University (Form 1) should be used.
2 Application qualification documents – Applicants in the qualification category (1) should submit a copy of the letter of admission.
– Applicants in the qualification category (2) should submit a student registration certificate.
– Applicants in the qualification category (3) should submit a copy of the entrance examination slip for the master’s program.

* If an applicant in category (1) lost the letter of admission and is unable to submit a copy, it has to be reissued. The reissue request should be made to the Entrance Examination Section of Osaka Prefecture University or the academic affairs section of the School of Engineering of Osaka City University.

An applicant in category (3) who has passed the examination for the master’s program after submission of application documents should submit a copy of the letter of admission immediately after the announcement to the address mentioned in II-11. Contact.

3 Reason for Application The form provided by the University (Form 2) should be used.
4 Academic transcript The number of credits earned in the undergraduate school by the time of application, assessment and assessment criteria should be entered.

* An applicant who transferred in the third year of a university should submit academic transcripts of the current and previous education institutions.
5 A return envelope for an examination slip (when sending an application by postal mail) A self-addressed return envelope affixed with a 392 yen stamp

(1) No incomplete documents will be accepted.
(2) Documents submitted for application will not be returned.
(3) Changes to your application documents will not be accepted in principle once they are submitted.
(4) If any erroneous or false statement is found in the submitted documents, the admission may be canceled.
(5) Applicants’ personal information disclosed upon application documents will be utilized solely for screening purposes, while some information of those who have passed the examination, such as academic transcript, may be utilized for educational purposes in this program.
(6) An examination slip will be issued for those who have completed application procedures.
(7) No examination fee is charged.

II-5. Submission of Application Documents

II-6. Screening Method

(1) Examination contents

Small essay 100 points for full marks Theme will be announced on the date of examination.
Oral examination 100 points for full marks The first five minutes will be spent on presentation of your graduate thesis (or your current research subject if you are enrolled in the graduate school). Then, questions will be asked to test your knowledge. We will provide the equipment you may need for your presentation (PC installed with Windows8.1(OS) and Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 and a projector). You may also bring in your own PC and other equipment for your presentation as necessary.
Interview 100 points for full marks Taking into account the Reason for Application already submitted and the small essay, questions will be asked concerning the Admission Policy of the SiMS Degree Program.
(2) Selection method

The selection is made according to the total scores of the small essay, oral examination, and interview. Applicants in category (3), who failed in the entrance examination of the master’s programs described in 3. (3) (A)-(O), will be excluded from screening consideration.

  1. Time table for an oral examination and an interview will be announced at the venue after the small essay test. Some applicants may have to take the oral examination and an interview on the second day.
  2. Late arrival to the venue up to 20 minutes for the small essay examination is still allowed to take the examination, but the examination time will not be extended. However, if the reason for late arrival is due to such reasons listed below, it would be allowed to for the applicant to sit for the examination within 40 minutes of the start of the examination, and the examination time may be extended.
    Permitted reasons for late arrival:

    • Being late by 20 minutes or more because of suspension of public transport due to an accident, a natural disaster, and etc.
    • Unexpected accident, injury, illness on the way to the examination venue.
  3. Items to be brought: Entrance examination slip, writing implement.
  4. A watch with calculation or communication capabilities are prohibited.
  5. Cell phones must be turned off, as it not allowed to use them to check the time.
  6. When the examination is cancelled or unable to be carried out according to the schedule because of natural disaster or other reasons, an “Emergency Notice” will be posted on the website of the SiMS Program. ( Please check to find the necessary information.

II-8. Announcement of Examination Results

  2. Venues: A3 Building in the OPU Nakamozu Campus, and the Student Support Center in the OCU Sugimoto Campus

  2. Eligibility:  Successful applicants, who passed the examination and signed up for enrollment in any one of the graduate school department (A)-(O) mentioned in II-3, are eligible for the enrollment in the SiMS program.
