Osaka Prefecture University – Leading Symposium 2014

Osaka Prefecture University Leading Program Symposium 2014

December 9, 2014 (Tue), Leading Program Doctorate Education Osaka Prefecture University/Osaka City University, “Graduate Course for System-inspired Leaders in Material Science” Symposium 2014 ~Invitation to Industry-led Type Doctorate~ was held in the Conference Hall on the Nakamozu campus of Osaka Prefecture University. Last year, as a kick-off symposium, it was jointly held by Osaka Prefecture University and Osaka City University, but this year, it had been decided that each university would carry out the symposium in their own way.

Date: December 9, 2014 (Tue) 13:30 to 17:00
Venue: Conference Hall, Nakamozu Campus, Osaka Prefecture University

The symposium was supposed to start at 13:30, but the participating students gathered before the opening of 13:00. There were almost no vacancies left in the venue, and the symposium began with the opening greeting from the Program Coordinator, Prof. Tatsumisago.

After an explanation of the program from Prof. Tatsumisago, Specially-appointed Professor Sakai gave a lecture titled “Expectations of a Doctorate from a Company and the Attraction of the SiMS Program,” followed by a lecture from Prof. Tiwana who was invited from Georgia University of the U.S. titled, “The Success of Doctorates Abroad.” Then lectures were given by three young corporate researchers with doctorates who graduated from the Osaka Prefecture University, followed by short speeches by four students. The speeches gave the students who are aiming for doctorates courage.

The event to note in particular this time was the panel discussion between young corporate researchers and SiMS students. An active exchange of ideas was carried out regarding what the students mostly had in mind such as the merits of having a doctorate, what should be done as a student, and career paths, along with questions from the students. In total, there were 209 participating students, and in the near future, we look to recruit students in ways such as individual consultation meetings.
